Signature Management is proud to acknowledge and recognize its founder and leader, Mr. Richard Waitzer, for receiving the 2018 Outstanding Philanthropist at the National Philanthropy Day Awards.

Mr. Waitzer started Signature Management Corporation in 1966 with leadership, responsibility and service at the heart of the company’s core values. Through his enduring philanthropic contributions to organizations like the Virginia Symphony, Chrysler Museum of Art, Eastern Virginia Medical School, the Elizabeth River Project, United Way South Hampton Roads, For Kids, Hope House Foundation and many more charitable causes in our region, Mr. Waitzer was able to bring his commitment to his community to life.

Mr. Waitzer shared this same commitment through his leadership in Signature Management’s many businesses and development projects through company-sponsored service projects. Mr. Waitzer was the embodiment of responsibility in his leadership style, working without pretense and with great care for more than 60 years, and was ultimately awarded the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award for his enormous contributions to the multifamily industry.

“Working with my father meant working with a man who would always meet you right where you were, while leading you toward excellence and achieving your highest goals,” Brad Waitzer, President of Signature Management, said. “He believed in serving his residents, his employees and his community, and he felt strongly that our company’s success was directly linked to the success of its people and the betterment of the communities it served. His professional and personal life truly is an enduring legacy of genuine responsibility, and we have modeled our company’s core values directly from the example he set for each of us over his many decades in business.”

Signature Management Corporation kicked off the 2019 holiday season by delivering 3,691 pounds of food to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia as part of their 3rd Annual Food Drive on November 15, 2019.

Beginning November 1, 2019, Signature Management teams from the Southside and Peninsula, in partnership with vendors CoStar and HD Supply, collected non-perishable, nutritious foods in designated collection boxes, located at each of their properties across Hampton Roads. Signature Management staff and employees gathered on November 15th and went door to door collecting paper grocery bags filled with donations left by community residents. Altogether, Signature teams collectively delivered a grand total of 3,691 pounds of food, or 3,076 meals to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia’s headquarters on Tidewater Drive in Norfolk, VA.

Signature Management Regional Director of Operations, Matt Miller, said of the experience, “Our residents, employees, commercial tenants and vendors came together over the last few weeks to help put food on the table for thousands of families across our region. As we unloaded six vehicles full of food, two of our property managers overheard a Food Bank employee say, ‘Now, it is starting to feel like the holidays.’ Today, through teamwork, we put our company’s core values to work by helping to feed our local community. It truly was an impactful day.”

With over 60 years of experience in the real estate industry, Signature Management Corporation specializes in investment, development, general contracting and property management. Based in Virginia Beach, VA, Signature affiliates develop, own and manage apartment communities and commercial properties throughout Hampton Roads.

Research shows that moving can be one of the most stressful events in your life, even if you are moving to the apartment or townhome of your dreams.

Trying to find the right home for you that also welcomes and embraces your four-legged family members can make your moving plans even more stressful. Signature Management communities across Hampton Roads are all pet-friendly and pet-welcoming, and that’s because we’re pet owners and lovers ourselves. We know firsthand how your apartment simply can’t feel like home without your furry family members in it.

We welcome dogs and cats to all of our properties, including large breed dogs that can frequently be turned away at neighboring communities (we know that big dogs have equally big hearts, after all).

We want our resident dogs and cats to move in and feel right at home, and that’s why our apartments and townhomes have large, bright and airy windows (perfect for sun-loving cats and dogs) and sizable dog parks with space for both small and large breed dogs to get out and socialize. We keep dog treats on hand in our office, and plan an annual Doggie Dip Day in our communities with pools, to give our pups a chance to enjoy one of our residents’ favorite amenities.

We see our residents and their pets making the most of our walk-able neighborhoods and making friends with like-minded animal lovers who understand that there’s no friendship quite like the one they have with their fur-baby. Moving marks a major change in your life, and having a pet-friendly apartment community to come home to can significantly ease the stress.

Ask us how we can best accommodate your furry family members as you plan your next move to one of our award-winning, pet friendly apartment communities in Hampton Roads

Moving to a new apartment is an exciting time, but it also comes with a fair amount of stress. Even if you’ve moved many times, you know there is more to moving than packing and unpacking boxes.

Whether it’s preparing a budget, setting up utilities, hiring movers and finding care on moving day for pets and young kids, it’s important to plan ahead to avoid last minute chaos and headaches during your move.

Here are 10 simple hacks to help you make this your most stress-free move yet!

Transfer/Set Up Utilities
Before you begin, transfer and set up utilities as needed, ahead of your moving day. You won’t want to show up on day one and discover you have no water, and having internet access available to you will be key in your first few days in your new home.

Set a Budget
We know that moving is expensive, but with a clear plan and a solid budget, it doesn’t have to break your bank account or your back. Set a budget to make it easier to hire movers, choose packing supplies and find child and pet care for your loved ones on the day of your move. Once you know what you’re working with, you can make good choices to support a smooth move.

Hire Movers
Price out movers, and hire an affordable team with a good reputation. Hiring movers will not only speed up your moving day process, but it will ensure that your belongings are moved efficiently and with care. Moving is one of the most stressful events in a person’s life, and having a team of experienced professionals helping you do it will make all the difference.

Donate/Sell/Throw Away
Before you plan to pack your first box, go through your home and purge the items you don’t wish to take with you. Donate, sell or throw away items that no longer fit, work or serve you. You’ll go into the packing process feeling a lot lighter, and you’ll save some time and money on packing, while you’re at it.

Plan Packing Supplies
Take an inventory of your belongings, and plan out supplies you’ll need to get started. Consider how many wardrobe boxes you’ll need to move clothes on hangers, and how many boxes or suitcases you already own. Take stock of kitchen items and other breakables, and be sure to choose boxes in multiples sizes to accommodate items of varying weight.

Moving Day Essentials
Pack a cooler with cold drinks and snacks, a small suitcase with change of clothes, clean towels, sheets and toiletries and a box of necessary kitchen items that you can unpack at the end of the long day. You’ll want to make sure you keep important documents and anything valuable with you as you move, and you’ll want to ensure that you have the basics in hand at the end of the day, so you can kick back and relax in your new home.

Important Documents
Before you begin packing away your home, gather up all important and necessary documents and store them in an easy to get to container or box that you can keep with you on moving day.

Towels and Linens for the Win
Rather than pack boxes full of soft, fluffy towels and linens, put those items to good use as packing materials and save money and space. Layer towels between breakable items, picture frames, or small paintings. Wrap thick sheets around artwork, lamps and vases. You can use socks and dish towels to wrap and pack sharp kitchen utensils, as well.

Label & Photograph Your Box Contents
You’ll make your unpacking process both faster and easier on the other side, if you make sure to clearly label boxes and snap pictures of the contents of important boxes. If you’ve hired movers and want to make sure boxes end up in the right rooms, label boxes with color coding that corresponds to rooms in your new apartment. While getting the boxes out and into your new home is important, that unpacking process awaits. Make your life easier by staying organized and prepared.

Pets and Kids
Moving day will be busy and long, no matter how efficient your movers are. Plan to have your pets and/or your kids taken care of and out of the way so that you and your movers can get down to business without worries. Some pets have a hard time transitioning into a new home, and it may be helpful to bring their beds and toys into the apartment right away to give them familiarity when they arrive. Young kids can have a hard time adjusting, as well. Be sure to have their favorite toys, blankets and comfort items available to them on that first night in your new home.

Being a dog owner is rewarding and so much fun, but it also comes with a lot of responsibility. After all, caring for a dog isn’t just about feeding them and giving them love. As a dog owner, you’ll also want to give him training to help him thrive around others, provide him with proper exercise and socialization and ensure that you both build good reputations with your neighbors.

Making sure to keep your dog leashed at all times, scoop their poop and provide them with basic training to help them feel a sense of security as they learn to engage with you, your neighbors and other dogs are all crucial to giving them a good life in a happy neighborhood.

Here are simple tips to help you and your dog become great neighbors in the neighborhood you love.

Love Your Leash
Even the best trained and most friendly and gentle dogs need to remain on a leash when outside your front door. It shows your neighbors that you respect their safety, and it keeps your dog safe from being injured by other dogs, hit by a car or harming wildlife. If your community has a Bark Park, where your pup can safely play off leash, be sure to follow the rules and guidelines carefully to ensure that they’re time off leash is safe and fun for all.

Supervise Play
Anytime your pup is at play, be sure to supervise closely. If your townhome has a fenced backyard, do not leave your pup off leash and roaming free unsupervised. Not only will your dog likely get bored in a yard alone for stretches of time, but they may take to digging, eating plants (many of which can be toxic) or barking. Your dog is under your care and will always do best if you supervise and even join in on his play and down time.

Manage Street Style
While out for walks in the neighborhood, be mindful of how greeting others can spook both your neighbors and your dog. Some humans have had negative encounters with dogs in the past and can be afraid of approaching dogs. Children especially can be inexperienced and uncomfortable around pets they don’t know. Never approach a stranger or assume that neighbors want to pet or be close to your pup without first asking for their consent. Be mindful of your dog’s comfort level as well, knowing whether or not your dog becomes spooked by other animals and humans will determine how you walk and communicate with neighbors on the street.

Train Your Pup
A trained pup is a happy pup, and we always recommend giving your pup some amount of basic training to help them learn how to engage with both you and your neighbors comfortably and successfully. Dog training is also a positive way to bond with your pup, as you two will learn more about how to interact and experience the world together. You want your dog to grow up to have positive associations with you and your neighbors, and basic dog training can help you to do so in just a few weeks.

Proper Poop Scoop
Always scoop your dog’s poop, even in your own backyard. Leaving dog poop on the sidewalk, in neighboring yards or in your own backyard is one of the fastest ways to get a bad reputation as a neighbor. Carry extra baggies with you on all walks, as some dogs may surprise you by going more than once in a walk. Properly dispose of your baggies and keep the streets free and clear for other neighbors and pups to roam.

Signature Management Corporation’s staff and employees from all eight of our properties across Hampton Roads, including York County and Williamsburg, VA, kicked off the 2019 holiday season by participating in their 3rd Annual Food Drive to support the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia from November 1st to November 15th, 2018.

On November 15th, Signature Management teams from the Southside and Peninsula were proud to deliver all 3,691 pounds of food to the hardworking team at the Foodbank and learn about the work they do to help feed individuals and families across Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore.

After weeks of collecting non-perishable, nutritious foods in designated collection boxes located at each property, Signature Management’s team gathered on November 15th and went door to door collecting paper grocery bags filled with donations left by community residents. Altogether, our teams collectively delivered a grand total of 3,691 pounds of food, or 3,076 meals to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia’s headquarters on Tidewater Drive in Norfolk, VA.

Signature Management Regional Director of Operations, Matt Miller, said of the experience, “Every Friday is distribution day for the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia and pulling in you could see the line backed out of the building. Our residents, employees, commercial tenants and vendors came together over the last few weeks to help put food on the table for thousands of families. As we unloaded six vehicles full of food, two of our property managers overheard a Food Bank employee say, ‘Now, its starting to feel like the holidays.’ As you all know, we have five company core values: Honesty, Excellence, Accountability, Responsibility and Teamwork. Today, through teamwork, we put our responsibility core value to work by helping to feed our local community. It truly was an impactful day.”

Signature Management Corporation would like to extend special thanks to CoStar and HD Supply for supporting this effort. We are proud to partner with vendors who understand the value in giving back.
